A furnished rental apartment and B&B? I think that's what we have.
We're putting the finishing touches on the basement apartment, writing up the ad to post on Craigslist for a regular apartment for rent. Then we started thinking...and planning...and well, that never ends well. Because I really really really want to do this other project, that requires we have the basement space at least a few times a year, we're going to just make the apartment a temp/short-term rental. BUT, it will be fully furnished, complete with linens, kitchen accoutrements, TV, stereo...you name it.
There actually seems to be a pretty good market for such accomodations in the Denver area, so this just might work out (unlike many of our other hair-brained schemes). Traveling nurses, law students, people moving away from Denver but their homes are already sold, and so on. I'm actually in communication with a couple who work up in Antarctica and they're looking for a place to summer in Denver! How cool would that be?
So, I put that ad in Craigslist today because I know if I don't have it posted to the universe that this place will be available April 1, we'll still be needing to hang doors and lay carpet come that date. You take your motivation where you can get it, right?
My life, it is so interesting.
...I only keep this blog to play around with the backgrounds and themes. *G* Nah, not really, but I do have fun. I keep WAITING for them to come up with a Denver cityscape theme. *nudge nudge* And yes, I've sent them numerous requests, which I guess means I should probably use it if and when they finally create one.
I"ve been very buy at work, but most important I'm hoping to do some fun things in my private life as well. I continue to be enchanted with knitting and going to the local Stitch n Bitches every week to keep me movtivate. I'm actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for the scarf I'm making Wolfie from the baby alpaca I wrote about previously. In conclusion, it will be a long long LONG time before I knit another scarf. Next project is a shrug for vacation at the end of April.
And speaking of, we're finally going to stop saying "one day..." and finally booked flights to London and Dublin, leaving April 23. I'm so excited I can hardly stand still!! It's just the first of what I'm hoping will be regular trips to Europe in the coming years.
I've just signed up for a beginner and intermediate Doumbek class being taught here in Denver by Master Percussionist, Souhail Kaspar in February and I'm really looking forward to picking my drum up again. It's been YEARS! Luckily there is a prep study group the weekend before so I won't look like a total idiot whose never seen a drum before. I was actually starting to get pretty good when I stopped playing (pre-restaurant).
Wolfie and I are both considering taking an Aikido class at the local Free University, but I have to find out if I'm even going to be able to do it with my back surgery and all.
So, I'm still loving being in the center of town and availing myself of all the goodies Denver has to offer. We're seeing Carbon Leaf on the 9th and I've still got to get my tickets to see Niko Case in April!!
Whew! That seems like a lot of stuff when I write it all down!
We got the Democratic National Convention. It was between us and NYC, and thankfully Howard Dean loves Colorado. This will be really good news for our economy (I HOPE) as all those convention dollars roll into the city.
.
It seems forever since I"ve posted, mostly because it seemed I was posting every day there for awhile.
My new year isn't anything special, but I have started Jenny Craig this week, in hopes of losing 40 lbs by the time we go to Europe in September. That should be doable, right?
I have finally realized I am a very lazy person and need someone to tell me exactly what to eat when or I will just eat everything all the time. Bleh.
So, no gourmet dinners for us for awhile, which is going to be hard. I refused to give up a glass of wine with my dinner, though, so they showed me how to adjust my diet plan to accomodate that.
I feel like knitting.
It's snowing (AGAIN) and blowing (AGAIN) and I just want to be home under my afghan with my puppies and knitting needles.
Permission granted to link to her LJ post with some really awesome pics of Downtown!

Ok, all you guys in Las Vegas and Phoenix. This is what REAL winter looks like. *G*
As long as I stay heavily dosed with Dayquil Cough Formula, I appear fairly normal. Unless I have to exert myself or talk alot. Then all bets are off and I'm a coughing fool. It didn't slow me down, though.
Managed to go out furniture shopping before all my energy abandoned me and we found leather living room furniture we could both live with. It's sort of a cinnamony leather with very firm cusions. Sofa, chair and ottoman and chaise. I love the chaise. We opted for that rather than the loveseat. Wolfie wanted them all, but I had to talk him down with the reminder that the living room just isn't that big. Wanted a slate-top coffee table we saw under the clearance tent as we went in the store, but when we went back to get the tag off of it, it was sold. :( We settled for an oak gametable top coffee table. Checkers and Backgammon! It'll be fun!
The old leather furniture will go down to the basement in the "entertainment" room. Ha! I never thought I'd have a real Entertainment Room. The rest of the basement got planned, as well. A guest room, a commercial/health dept. approved kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, ENTERTAINMENT ROOM, and the front two rooms with hardwood floors will be service for our Supper Club we have planned. I totally psyched!
The icky, smelly, nasty-ass carpet finally got pulled up this weekend. God, it was gross! We now have concrete floors with dried carpet glue on them, but believe me...that's SO MUCH BETTER.
We found what we think are the original wooden and glass doors that go on the front of the built-in bookcases in the house. The measurements match up at least and I think we can make them work, even if that wasn't their original purpose. We thought they were windows that swung open, but now really believe they were glass doors for these bookcases (the ones that divide the living and dining rooms).
We are so not ready to have a housewarming party, but about 20 people have already RSVP'd so it's a go next weekend and we'll just tell everyone to use their imaginations and tell them what we plan to do. LOL!
Oh, and we have these uber cool windows on the ends of the front porch that swing open, and we cleaned and polished them up today and I cannot believe how much brighter it makes the porch feel!
The last thing we did was hang three doors we found in the basement in the furnace room. One off the kitchen into the hall upstairs and the other two downstairs. I cannot wait to get the basement redone into a livable space! And I don't think it's going to take all that much. I'm hoping it will be our winter project this year.
So, that's all the boring house shit for now. I'm really loving the place and so glad we moved down here. Friday night, driving to this cool jazz bar/seafood restaurant for dinner only ten minutes from the house was awesome! Central Denver rocks!
We went to the Taste of the Nation tonight. We've gone just about every year wherever we're living for ten years, with the obvious exception of the last two or three. But, I was all excited and looking forward to learning about maybe some new places to eat in my new city and stuff.
What a letdown. I'm really glad we bought the tickets...good cause and all. And I'll probably keep doing it, no matter where they have it, but this event needs some serious organization mojo. I so want to share some points that would make it so much more enjoyable for everyone, the first being GET A LARGER SPACE. Anyway, it was ok and that's as good as I go with it. And there were twice as many wineries/wine shops represented as there were restaurants.
Just for shits and grins I'm sharing the latest offering on the "learn to dance" scene here. The excerpt below is cut from the local community I belong to promoting The Art of Burlesque! Here is what you too can learn!
The Basics
Learn the shimmy, the bump and the grind, and learn how to incorporate them into a burlesque dance.
Creation of a character and development of an act
Discussion will include picking your ‘Burlesque Name’, how to pick and use music, and the steps to creating a burlesque act.
Costuming
How to take them off and how to make them so you can take them off. Examples will be brought in, resources will be shared and the basics of design and construction will be discussed. Students will also start a design for next week’s costume construction class.

It reminded me of an episode of Real Sex I saw on HBO once and it very well could be the same teacher. At the end of the six or so classes, the students actually put on a burlesque act for an audience, i.e., did themselves up as their chosen characters, performed their act, which invariably ended with a strip-tease.
Okaaaay.
That ends your local Denver scene weekend news. Ciao kittens!
